The Aten

Akhenaten worships the Aten. The king is represented as a Sphinx and offers a ritual vessel infront of offering tables loaded with lotus flowers. The Aten is the sun disk and it's rays which end in tiny hands which are often depicted showering images of Akhenaten and the royal family with symbols of life. The Sphinx symbology was considered important at boundaries and entrances and so this piece probably functioned as an orthostat beside a door or gateway.
